One thing that did offset the boredom and gloom was a whole stack of people wishing me well. I got lots of supportive messages, including one from someone who will remain anonymous in order to preserve their reputation... "Dave I am praying for you. No really, prayers are being said". Unfortunately, I don't think I will have lived up to the bemusing faith that plenty of people have expressed in me.
Irritatingly, the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is different to almost anywhere else in the University in that you have to pass everything from a year in order to be allowed to continue any further with your education, and while I may have passed two out of the three units I had to re-sit, I find it unlikely that I will have passed them all. This means I will probably be repeating second year, which will be a breeze second time round, but a bit of a pain.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who helped me out and wished me luck. I'm off to Queensland for two weeks to find out what being a doctor is really all about, and hopefully that will enable me to make an informed decision about whether repeating is worth it. I think it probably is.
