[Previous entry: "What profit is not"] [Next entry: "Subtract the number of enemy casualties from that of your own - if a positive number, declare victory"] It was brought home to me today just how much the time I spend around computers affects my behaviour.

It's a few minutes before the lecture starts, and I notice that the lecturer has got all her files arranged on her desktop like an absolute dog's breakfast - not unusual. She's moving them around, and I'm pretty sure I see her drop one lecture folder into another folder.

It turns out that this is the lecture we're having, and she's having terrible trouble finding the file. It starts off with the standard 'rearrange my desktop manually in the hope of finding it'. And continues. And continues.

I'm actually getting physically uncomfortable because she just keeps going past the folder I'm sure she's dropped it in. People around me start to become aware of the muttering 'no, no, no, click that - click - oh come on, come on, click - no, no, oh for the love of -'. Several of my friends are having a good laugh at both the lecturer and my obvious discomfort, until someone talks me into going up and helping her out, mainly because we don't want to have to come back another day for the lecture.

I adopt the standard IT Worker walk and slope my way onto the stage... "sorry to intrude, perhaps you dragged it into another folder, yes, I'd try that one there, there it is, not at all, happy to be of service", slope off stage and gesticulate rudely at those still laughing at me. Both the lecturer and I are clearly rather embarrased.

Never again (though I suspect the reason that I've survived this long is that I had other people who jumped up well before I did).

Also,
$ /usr/bin/python
>> from uwa import ucc
>> com06 = ucc.get_committees()[0x20]
>> pres = com06['president']
>> print pres
'zanchey'

I've been doing the same thing in every Math2210 lecture I've showed up too, the guy doesn't have a clue and it's not like I know _that_ much about computers. I don't go up to help him mainly because he's a dickhead and I'm not convinced he'd understand me anyway (an asian non-english speaking dude).

And now you get silly people posting on the feed instead of the blog! Win!

I understand about the computers thing - I almost get psychotic when people use incorrect Latin plurals.

when lecturers are bumbling around the front.

actually i think PBL is worse because my tutor doesn't understand overhead machines and can't move it in the correct direction and the page is always half way off the screen..
