[Previous entry: "No reason for reason"] [Next entry: "At LCA07 - Day 2"] I am at linux.conf.au 2007. It's my first LCA, and quite a different experience.

For example, on the first night of AMSA CONVENTION 2006, large amounts of alcohol consumption, dancing, injuries and debauchery occurred.

On the first night of LCA, five of us crammed into my college room clustered around a portable network switch connecting to the Internet through 100% Bernardcrack. (I have a photo, but this little laptop is no good for processing or uploading it.)

The conference itself this morning was great - I donned a bright orange t-shirt and helped with the professional delegates' registrations (Linus Torvalds is coming - I saw his name badge). The welcome address was pretty hilarious, and I'm sure will be mentioned in dispatches.

I attended talks on:

Of the four talks, Keith Packard's was the most entertaining, but I was a bit disappointed with the literature review talk - although the presenter admitted to being underprepared, there wasn't much that wasn't read straight off the slides and was more a list of possible references than a in-depth review. Mind you, I am just an undergraduate, so that may actually be the proper format for such a talk in real academic circles.

It's all very enjoyable, and we finished the evening with a walk along Coogee Beach. I kept trying to start jokes that went 'five Linux geeks get into a car and ...'. I took a fantastic photo, but it'll have to wait until I get home.

Roll on day 2 - I'm supposed to be helping with the wireless network in six and a half hours!

Why do I continually break the rule of never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever volunteering for anything ever?
