Outgoing President's Report for 2007
2006 was a solid year for The University Computer Club.
We ran many successful events: several decent LANs, a Zone3 night and a superb 32nd anniversary dinner. We also took part in an extremely successful quiz night in conjunction with UniSFA, and participated in the Cameron Hall Charity Vigil. Our annual camp was unsuccessful, largely through poor timing and non-attendance.
One of the targets for the 2006 committee was to raise more sponsorship for the club, whether in cash or equipment donations. This was fairly unsuccessful, although we managed to attract Nintek as a supporter of the club. This is an area that will need serious attention in 2007.
From a financial point of view, the UCC is in a much more sustainable position, largely due to the hard work of the treasurer, the committee and members in maintaining revenue, running successful fundraisers and cutting costs. Although we got burgled twice, losses from this have been offset and measures taken to avoid a recurrence.
In particular, moving our archives and stored equipment out of Shenton Park provided a great history lesson for those who attended the cleanup, as well as reducing our bills. We also became the sole student group on campus to provide an unmetered Internet connection to members thanks to the hard work of UCC members working with ITS, which greatly reduced the monthly imposition of Internet traffic billing.
Relationships with the Guild have been generally good. The UCC provided representatives to all SOC Councils and met its other requirements of Guild affiliation. However, SOC failed to meet their obligations with regard to the Tenancy agreement, and little progress was made on the issue of security in Cameron Hall. Improvements to security in Cameron Hall can be expected to take place over the next few years due to the complex negotiation process required. A representative of the UCC was also apparently on the UCS/Guild IT advisory committee last year, but there was no activity on this committee.
We acquired a small amount of new computer equipment: new wireless infrastructure, a Packeteer PacketShaper (kindly donated by Peter N Lewis), two new PCs (donated by Data Analysis Australia), and a large A0-sized printer/plotter.
Finally, we produced some very popular t-shirts, an edition of our sporadic journal "Murphy's Lore", and improved communication with our members through the regular production of UCC News.
Overall, 2006 was largely a successful year of general improvement and stabilisation. I wish the new committee good fortune in managing and improving the University Computer Club in 2007.

Under Guild regulations, the outgoing president of clubs is required to submit a report at the end of their tenure.
Holy crap, seriously?

Stephanie - yes! There are all sorts of interesting things in the Guild regs, none of which are enforced.
