Starting off, here are some "medblogs". Many medical bloggers annoy me, and I still feel a bit uncomfortable about discussing anything to do with patients that is more than a trivial exchange. Despite this, I enjoy a couple of UK general practitioner's blogs, both written anonymously.
- "Dr Andrew Brown" admits to liking almost all his patients. He writes an insightful, gentle series of posts at A fortunate man on his patients and his practice. They are candid and manage to convey a humanity that is inspiring. There is a lot of focus on getting more doctors into general practice (17% of medical students in WA intend to become GPs) and his writing certainly convinces me.
From the sublime to the ridiculous - or at least ridiculously angry.
- "Dr John Crippen" articulates his dislike of nurse quacktitioners, alternative medicine or "woo", and the British government at NHS BLOG DOCTOR, as well as talking about some of his more memorable patients and discussing the challenges of working within the paradigm of State-provided healthcare, the British NHS. I don't agree with everything he writes (it would certainly be politically inexpedient to do so) but you've got to admire anyone who turns anger into an artform.
I do read some other medical blogs, but these are the stand-outs. I am yet to find an Australian GP whose blogging matches either of these in consistency and quality.
