How not to name your kid (15 Feb 2009)

[Previous entry: "Non-boring examples of generators in Python"] [Next entry: "Premonitions"] I'm on a paediatrics rotation at the moment, and during rounds a few days ago there was a hilarious discussion of terrible, terrible names for children. Unfortunately, it's not really appropriate to publish them, but a few things do spring to mind:

There's apparently a paper out there which shows that presentations to emergency departments are much higher if you're named after a city or state (like 'Dakota' or 'Madison') or a weather phenomenon (like 'Summer' or 'Storm').
Some people spell 'Chris' as 'X' (like in 'Xmas').
In entertainment news, I remember Roy and HG suggesting some names for Princess Mary's baby, including "Briony... with three 'y's." (Brynyny?) and you can watch The Chaser's Citizen Infringement Officer on inappropriate baby names.
I was led to believe that there's an online list of all baby names in South Australia which isn't quite true, but you can search the database for SA and other states, and clever application of search parameters can lead to some moderately amusing results.
